Oilers GM says ‘nothing new’ in salary cap situation

GM Ron Wilson has acknowledged that the Oilers have not fully figured out how to use the cap and that it remains a concern.

Wilson said he expects the team to be in the range of $63-64 million in salary-cap space this season.

He added that the team is working to reduce its cap hit for next season.

He also said he believes the team has been able to keep the players on their current contracts through the free-agent signing period.

Wilson did not specify what sort of savings the team plans to make, but he said the Oilers are looking at the options for a potential return to the salary-capped.

That means cutting players and re-signing them.

Wilson said that he is aware of some talks about a contract extension for some of the players, but it would be up to the team.
